What is Cacao?

The cacao tree (Theobroma cacao) is believed to have originated in the Amazon basin and was cultivated by ancient Mesoamerican civilizations like the Mayans and Aztecs. Cacao is the key ingredient used to make chocolate.

Health Benefits of Cacao:

Cacao offers health benefits for the physical, mental, emotional and energetic body.

Physically, cacao enhances the immune system, lowers cholesterol and blood pressure, increases vitality, creativity and concentration.

Deeper self-awareness and connection: Cacao is frequently utilized to shift perspectives, allowing individuals to identify and release recurring patterns or negative habits, as well as to eliminate energetic blockages and unhelpful elements. Abundant in theobromine, cacao delivers a surge of energy that promotes mental concentration and supports memory functions. Acting as a catalyst for elevated mood, creativity, cacao also aids in fostering profound inner contemplation and connectivity.

Cacao boasts an abundance of antioxidants and houses a diverse range of nutrients, encompassing more than 300 components such as magnesium, significant iron content, omega-6 fatty acids, vitamin C, chromium, trace minerals, sulphur, zinc, and copper, among others.

Raw cacao contains nearly four times the antioxidant content of regular processed dark chocolate and 20 times more than blueberries.

Spiritual Benefits of Cacao:

Cacao, revered for its potent properties, is embraced as nourishing, soul-returning medicine that supports in elevating our vibration and bridging the connection to the ethereal realm. This sacred medicine intricately weaves a path for us to delve into stillness, quieting the chatter of the mind and gently coaxing our hearts to unfurl in openness and vulnerability.

Theobroma cacao, translating to "food of the gods," represents not only a connection to external forces of creation but also serves as a divine offering intended to link us to the internal sacred essence of creation.

Important Information on Cacao Consumption

This is particularly important if you have never taken cacao before, or if you have any serious health concerns. Tips for working with Cacao on your own

A Cacao Ceremony is a mindful and nourishing ritual that can be a wonderful practice, bringing insight, self awareness, and healing to your life.

  • The ceremony begins with the blessings that the farmers place upon their land and on the cacao trees. Every step of the way High-quality, ethically-sourced cacao beans are fermented, roasted, cracked, and stone ground into a rich, creamy paste.

There are many wonderful ceremonial grade cacao producers. One of my favorites is from a non profit company called Kakao who is sourcing the highest quality whole heirloom cacao beans, and stone ground by traditional means with intention. KAKAO works closely with the farmers in Guatemala (Criollo strain) and Peru (Chuncho strain) to source and protect these native, heirloom cacao trees. In 2024 they will be working with the Arhuaco tribe to make a native strain from Columbia as well.

  • To prepare, intentionally combine cacao with warm water and stir with prayer and intention. If you feal inclined, add a touch of aromatic spices like cinnamon, cardamom, or chili.

  • Once the cacao is ready, sit in a quiet, comfortable space. You may light candles, incense, or sage to create a calming, sacred atmosphere. Take a moment to set an intention for your ceremony - whether it's to cultivate gratitude, connect with yourself, or simply to enjoy a moment of mindfulness.

  • With intention set, offer a blessing and slowly sip and savor the warm, nourishing Cacao. Take time to notice the flavors, aromas, and sensations of the Cacao, allowing it to nourish both body and mind. You may choose to accompany Cacao with gentle movement, such as dance or breathwork.

  • After finishing the cacao, there is often time for quiet reflection or journaling.
